How each one works

Avalanche

Highest interest rate first

Clear the dearest debt first. This costs the least interest of any order — it is the mathematically optimal plan, and no other strategy on this page can beat it.

Best when you want the lowest total cost and can stay motivated without early wins.

Snowball

Smallest balance first

Clear the smallest debt first, whatever it costs. You lose a little to interest and buy something the maths cannot price: a debt gone from the list, early.

Best when momentum is the thing keeping you going.

Blizzard

One quick win, then by rate

The hybrid. Knock out the smallest balance for the early win, then switch to attacking the highest rate for the rest of the run.

Best when you want one win up front without paying for it all the way to the end.

Cash Flow Index

Lowest balance ÷ EMI first

Rank by how many months of instalment each debt has locked up. Clearing the lowest frees the most monthly cash per rupee repaid.

Best when the pressure is on the monthly budget rather than the total bill.

Two more worth knowing

A debt snowflake is not an order at all — it is the habit of throwing every windfall (a bonus, a refund, a month you underspent) at whichever debt you are already attacking. It layers on top of any strategy here; log it as a prepayment and the plan updates.

Consolidation — a balance transfer or a lower-rate refinance — changes the debts themselves rather than their order. It can beat every plan on this page, but only if the new rate genuinely undercuts the old one once processing fees are counted.
